More RAM or a better CPU?

Hi there. I just purchased a clearance server from a dedicated web host. The primary purpose of the server is for web hosting only. I was wondering if more RAM or a better CPU would be best to improve the server's performance. I am not planning on upgrading, but in case I want to, I wanted to know what option woud be best. [I have also been told Celeron processors have a bug where they can spike to 100% load in no time; true/false?] Specs: Celeron 3.0 GHz Processor, 1024MB RAM Thanks, Jared

  1. Generally speaking servers benefit more from ram than processor speed as they are able to 'pin' more data in memory to allow the clients faster access. But a Celeron server ?
  2. With those specs I would go with more RAM. You can chew through 1GB in very short order. The 3GHz Celeron should be solid for some time to come. All processors can spike to 100%, but it's not necessarily a bug. In fact, if the system is even remotely busy it's actually a good thing. It's a waste of computing resources to have a CPU that is just sitting idle and isn't processing anything.
  3. considering that celeron processors are the "economy" class of intel processors with less than 512k of l2 cache, get a new processor. 1gb of ram is fine for a webserver if you have a low amount of content or the content of the website is unsophisticated. Like if you have a huge sql database running along with asp.net then you should get more ram. and an itanium processor. but more ram would have the most effect on the database system.
  4. Deff get more ram at least 2 gb, and celeron processors are old school now days, need to upgrade to a intel core 2 duo or core 2 quad. Cam
  5. Definitely more RAM. I see that it's got 1Gb, but you'll have to look at the motherboard to see if it's got empty RAM slots to add more, of course. Also, with a 3Ghz processor, you can't get much faster with present technology: some, but probably not noticeable without running CPU benchmarks. You will definitely notice an increase in "zippiness" if you add more RAM. Make sure you get it at NewEgg for the best price. http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=17&name=Memory Hope that helps you!
