Domain and web hosting?

Hey, I'm currently building up a graphics portfolio and wanted to get a domain and webhosting. Now I'm not sure whether to just buy a domain name and link it to a free geocities account or freewebs for example, or go the whole way and get a domain and web hosting. What I basically want to know is what is the best system? I've looked at godaddy and 123 reg, even freewebs. They all have decent enough offers, but I'm wondering what others use and which is the best system to go for. Thanks

guessing at ur requirements, it seems like just gettin the domain is enough and u can get a URL redirect for that domain to the actual location where u hav hosted ur site... there r way too sites where u can host ur sites for free and without ads like googlepages.com 110mb.com (provides php support as well for free and without ads)
