Web Hosting Dedicated Hosting

Do I need a dedicated server?

I am considering starting a website that will keep all kinds of information about bars and restaurants in my city. There will probably be 200 or so places with reviews about all of them that users can post along with updates of things that are going on and each place on any given night that the bar owners can update. The front page will have a "whats going on this weekend" section and maybe a "bar of the month" or "drink of the week" along with 3 or 4 ads from local bars or businesses. I'm hoping to get 1000+ hits per day and maybe considerably more. What TYPE of web host do I need? if you recommend a web host please dont just list some place you are affiliated with. I need unbiased information.

  1. Sounds like you might want to try the many blog apps out there, and save yourself some considerable cost. Blooger and Geocities come to mind. I am affiliated with no web host sites.
  2. You would need someone who's knows HTML web design code. That would probably be the best thing, since it is the most basic and effective thing to use.
  3. well a shared server might work. or use a private server from your house. Check out softlayer.com that is who i used before for gaming servers
  4. In the first instance I am lead to believe you will not require a dedicated server. (I'm currently at work and asked our IT team!) When you do get 1000 hits a day then you can easily upgrade to a dedicated one. with the web host - like anything - shop around!
  5. You do not need a dedicated server. You can host it on GoDaddy or Yahoo (Google might also offer web hosting services). GoDaddy is by far the cheapest but their customer service is questionable at times. If you need enough bandwidth and/or storage to require a dedicated server, I would consider your web site a success!! BTW: I registered a domain name, and it expired, and now is being held hostage by a squatter who wants $1,000 for it. I checked "WHOIS" and guess what? The squatter is a front for GoDaddy. They wait for your own registration to expire just so they can snatch it up, knowing that if you had it before you might want it back and might be willing to fork over $1,000!!!
  6. Not unless your city happens to be NYC or Chicago. it would be allot easier and cheaper to just buy some space from a domain host such as godaddy.com. Servers are not for the average computer dude. They take allot of maintenance.
